Chase the fish.

2Iona

A self-drive fishing week on the southern Angolan coast with Boeta Louw. Meet in Namibe. Two days in Iona for big cob.

The coast

Desert on the left. Atlantic on the right.

About 200 kilometres of southern Angola, from the harbour at Namibe to the Cunene. These are the places the week actually moves through.

Namibe bay, boats on the water under a desert hill

The meeting

Namibe

The week starts in Moçâmedes. The bay is still a working harbour, desert already on the hills behind it. You meet Boeta here, then the road turns south and the town drops away.

Sand dunes dropping into the Atlantic

Past Tômbua

The dune coast

Tyres down after Tômbua. The dunes walk straight into the Atlantic, and for a long stretch the beach is the road. This is where the current starts to matter more than the map.

Namib dunes and welwitschia above the Atlantic surf

Two days

Iona

Iona is the reason for the trip. Two days on this shore for big cob, paddletails and bait, with the Namib on one shoulder and empty surf on the other. Six rods. No crowd.

Abandoned yellow buildings in the sand at Baía dos Tigres

The old station

Baía dos Tigres

An old fishing station the desert took back. The buildings sit in the sand, the bay is still wild, and the water in front of them is the kind of water you came for.

The Cunene River running through desert palms

The far edge

The Cunene

The park closes on the Cunene, the last green water before Namibia. Palms, rock, and a river that has no business being this alive in the Namib. That is the end of the week.

Fishing boats pulled up on an Angolan beach

A working coast

Six anglers, not a convoy.

Local boats still work these beaches. You are not joining a lodge circuit. You drive your own vehicle, fish with Boeta, and leave the sand the way you found it.

Boeta Louw

Your guide

Boeta Louw has been chasing fish since he was a kid.

The current decides the day. You just have to be there when it turns.

Fishing was the pull from the start. Wild Current is still run that way: small groups, early starts, and a guide who would rather be on the sand. Based in Namibia, he meets the group in Namibe and can help with the drive in.
